Getting Started
Getting Started (GS) is a physical activity and healthy eating programme based in the Otara Town Centre. It is aimed at overweight adults to help support a change in behaviour and lose weight.
This requires a GP referral and has an assessment and a personalised programme developed when they begin on the programme. Ongoing assessments help participants to measure their own progress. Referring doctors can also see patient progress through regular reports sent by the Getting Started team.
The following group-based activities are provided and the programme runs 5 days a week:
- Low impact and seated aerobics
- Aqua aerobics and water walking
- Tai Chi
These activities mean participants can develop their confidence with exercise and also enable social interaction with others.

The second key aspect of Getting Started is ‘Wise Kai’, a healthy eating course where participants can learn culturally relevant ways of cutting down the fats, reducing the sugars and increasing the nutritional f their own and their family’s food.
Ask a doctor or a Practice Nurse for a referral to Getting Started.
